Massachusetts Small Group Medical Rate Changes
The Massachusetts Division of Insurance has required carriers to implement changes to their small group (1-50 employees) rating methodology effective 7/1/11.
The changes are as follows:
1. Age bands have moved from 5-year to 1-year rating bands.
2. There will be a 15% cap placed on the demographic component of rating changes.
Both changes are effective for 7/1 anniversary dates and forward. The intent of these changes is to protect small group renewal rates against ‘shock’ increases facilitated by employees aging into higher age bands and/or employee turnover. The effect of these changes may result in more favorable premium rates for small group employers. These changes provide an excellent opportunity to educate our clients and prospects. We have the potential to run updated rates that may be favorable to our clients’ current situation.
